Westley TownsendPRIDE BEFORE THE FALL frontman and guitarist Westley Townsend is the son of New York Times bestselling horror novelist David Townsend and his ex-wife, former fashion designer Kristi Kai.
Townsend and Kai were married in 1979, and the birth of their first child, their son Cailen, followed shortly after. Townsend was beginning to experience a shocking rise to popularity following the release of his third novel, The Shining, and Kai was experiencing a downswing in the popularity of her designs. Eventually, Kai stopped her work as a designer to, instead, be a full time mother after giving birth to the couple's second child, Westley, in January 1983.
Both Cailen and Westley attended Staten Island Academy, and both continued on to college once they graduated from high school. Westley attended Harvard University, majoring in Chemistry until dropping out after the beginning of his junior year to concentrate on PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL.
During Westley's first semester at university, his parents separated and filed for divorce. It wasn't a huge surprise to either of the children, particularly Westley, who had just left home. Kai remained in the family's home on Staten Island and Townsend bought a home and land out of the city. Westley chose to spend summers and holidays at his father's home, and chose to live with his father until marrying PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL's drummer, Alyssa Davies, on May 31, 2008
